Català-Roca came to Madrid without belonging to it, and that gave him something local photographers often lose: the ability to be surprised by the everyday. His photographs of the 1950s and 60s capture a Madrid that does not pose, that does not know it is being watched.
He shot from the waist, without the viewfinder pressed to his eye. The gesture was almost casual, and that is why his subjects stayed themselves. Nobody looks at the camera because nobody knows there is a camera. And Madrid’s light, the horizontal light of first thing in the morning, the long shadows on the asphalt, he used exactly as it was.
Mr. Lee-Williams was not born in Madrid either. After many years between the island and the capital, the brand looks at the city with that mix of distance and affection that only time gives. It is the same position from which we made this collection.
We are not trying to recreate his era. We are after his principles: spontaneity, the city in the present, real light.
